Friday August 26th

Once again, a little behind the times. We had a semi double header this Friday. The official movie selection was The Brothers Grimm (it won the coin toss) but after work Rat and I went and saw Red Eye anyway.

Have to say I enjoyed Red eye more than Grimm.

Friday August 19th

A bit late but I figured I may as well update the page just to keep a written record of the clubs movies. The internet was down at the office last week so that at least gives me a little excuse.

The movie for this week was The 40 Year Old Virgin.

I'm hoping to actually get a review up here soon.

Movie Reivew: Broken Flowers

It's hard to put Broken Flowers into any one particular movie category. While it has it's serious moments it's not quite a drama and while it's often funny it's hard to label it as just a comedy. I guess you could call it the perfect dromedy.

Jim Jarmusch very much follows the Wes Anderson style of writing/directing in which the story seems to just come naturally from the characters lives. Once you accept the characters as real people the rest of the movie just makes perfect sense. That's probably why Murray was cast as the movie's lead. Though it feels odd to say, when talking about the guy who made it big with movies like Ghostbusters, Meatballs and Caddyshack and as a regular on SNL, Murray has become the quintessential 'dromedy' actor (in no small part due to his association with Anderson), and once again he pulls it off perfectly. While Broken Flowers also has a terrific supporting cast, it is definitely Murray's portrayal of 'Don Johnston' (don't forget that 'T') that makes this movie as great as it is.

If you're not a big fan of movies like 'Rushmore' or 'The Royal Tenenbaums' then you'll probably find yourself drifting off to sleep while watching Flowers, but if you are then you'll probably love this movie as much or more; I just can't say why exactly.

About the only real drawback to the entire movie was it's resolution, which while I didn't really like at the time, I'm beginning to feel actually fit the movie better than the one I had envisioned.

4.5 out of 5

Friday August 12th

See what happens when I'm gone for a week, no one updates the web site.

Apparently last weeks movie was March of the Penguins, which both Rat and Mac said was a very good documentary but didn't feel motivated enough to write a review for.

This week the field is open although Mac has already started early with his campaigning for Broken Flowers, but I don't know, Deuce Bigalow 2 is opening (honestly, the only way to explain that movie being made is someone has pictures of a studio exec and a farm animal in some saftey deposit box somewhere).

I guess this will be another down to the last minute nail biter.

Update:
